For the third consecutive year, health premiums will jump next year in Switzerland by an average of 6%, or 21 francs 60 francs per month. It is the federal council which announces it this Thursday, September 26. These premiums will increase by 25.30 francs for adults aged 26 and over, by 16 francs 10 for young adults and by 6 francs 50 francs for children.
Premiums that vary from one canton to another
In Geneva, for example, this premium will increase by 6.5%. Same observation in the canton of Vaud. Like this year, it is the Genevans who will pay the highest premiums in the country next year: 477 francs, all age categories combined.
Mandatory health insurance in Switzerland
In Switzerland, basic healthcare insurance (LAMal) in the event of illness and accident is compulsory.
Mandatory health insurance is managed by private funds. Premiums vary from one canton to another, however the services are identical with each insurer.
Everyone, from the moment they are born or take up residence in Switzerland, is required to be insured for care in the event of illness and accident.
Thus, in the days following the birth of your child or your taking up residence in the canton of Geneva, you will receive a letter from the Health Insurance Service (SAM) informing you of the steps to take in order to register with from a health insurer. Your affiliation must be effective within three months of taking up residence in Geneva, even if you are still awaiting the issuance of your residence permit.
These procedures must be completed within three months following birth or taking up residence in the canton. After this period, if the SAM has not received proof of your affiliation (copy of your insurance certificate), you will be automatically registered with an insurer.
In order to avoid automatic affiliation, it is imperative to begin these procedures as soon as possible upon receipt of SAM’s letter.
