Why does the PS5 Pro cost an arm and a leg? Here is Sony’s explanation

This September, Sony lifted the veil on the PS5 Pro, an improved version of the PS5. And one of the things that most appealed to the general public was the price of this new console. Indeed, the PS5 Pro costs 799 euros. And as we mentioned in a previous article, with this price, Sony crosses a red line and ventures into unknown territory.

The price of 799 euros would be justified

But why does the PS5 Pro cost so much for a home console? In an interview with IGN, Toshi Aoki, senior principal product manager at PlayStation, justifies this price by the presence of several innovations, such as a more powerful GPU, AI-based upscaling, or even resolution, but also other improvements that are not directly related to gameplay, such as 2 TB SSD or Wifi 7 support. “So it’s more of a complete package that will bring exceptional value to players…the most engaged players that we’re targeting,” he explains.

Toshi Aoki also comments on the fact that the PlayStation 5 Pro does not have a built-in disc drive. According to him, it’s a way of giving the player a choice. “For disc player, it is an option for gamers. Not all players have discs, although most can…but we have the option to be able to add this for these players. So I think it’s more about the balance of the value proposition that we offer”, he said.

Sony thought about it before the release of the PS5

In his interview with IGN, the head of PlayStation also reveals that Sony considered releasing this Pro version a long time ago, before the official release of the PS5. Discussions about the PS5 Pro began when the characteristics of the PS5 were already defined, knowing that the technology would evolve every year.

  • This September, Sony presented the PlayStation 5 Pro, which it sells for 799 euros
  • For a home console, this is a high price, but Sony believes it is justified
  • In addition to improvements like a better GPU, AI-based upscaling, or 8K resolution, the brand also mentions improvements like 2 TB of SSD memory or support for Wifi 7
  • The target is the most engaged players of PlayStation
  • Otherwise, Sony also reveals that it has been thinking about the PS5 Pro for a long time, even before the release of the PS5
