Two opioids, codeine and tramadol, to be prescribed on “secure” prescription from December 1: News

The prescription of two opioids used as painkillers, codeine and tramadol, will now be strictly regulated, reports BFMTV on Thursday, September 26.

A “secure” and “unforgeable” prescription. The two opioids prescribed only by prescription and often as painkillers, which are codeine and tramadol, will be strictly regulated from December 1st, report our colleagues at BFMTV this Thursday, September 26th.

Objective: to address the high risk of dependence on these two drugs, in the event of consumption beyond the recommended doses, with health risks. Both drugs are subject to abusive use and prescription in , particularly tramadol which is diverted as a sedative, even if the situation is not comparable to the United States, where the consumption of opioids and particularly fentanyl is creating a massive health crisis.

Safety measures and new prescription rules

From December 1st, prescriptions for the two opioids, whether alone or in combination with other substances (paracetamol, ibuprofen, etc.), will be secured, announces the French National Agency for the Safety of Medicines (ANSM). Prescriptions will be “unforgeable” thanks to several elements present: mention of mandatory information pre-printed in blue to identify the prescribing healthcare professional, appearance of a watermark representing a caduceus, presence of micro-letter squares to make falsification difficult, etc.

In addition, the dosage, the dose and the duration of the treatment must be written out in full. The maximum prescription period will also be reduced to a maximum of 12 weeks. After this period, the patient will have to obtain a new prescription.
