They say all good things must come to an end.
Throughout my career, I have faced many challenges, rising to the occasion after opportunity, and most of those challenges were supposed to be impossible. I have experienced incredible emotions, special moments and memories that will remain etched in my memory. As I look back on those moments, it is with immense pride and a sense of fulfillment that I announce my retirement from the game we all love.
I hold myself to the highest standards, I want to go out strong, not just hang on to the game. It takes a lot of courage to listen to your heart and your instincts. Wants and needs are two different things. I’ve fallen and gotten back up a thousand times, and this time it’s time to stop and hang up my boots by winning a trophy at Wembley in my last game.
I have loved fighting for myself, for my clubs, for my country, for my teammates and for the fans of every team I have played for. From Lens to Madrid, Manchester and our national team. I have defended every badge with everything I had, and I have loved every minute of this journey. Playing at the highest level is an exciting experience. It tests every part of your body and mind. The emotions we feel cannot be experienced anywhere else. As athletes, we are never satisfied, we never accept success. It is our nature and it is what fuels us.
I have no regrets, I wouldn’t change a thing. I’ve won more than I could have ever dreamed of, but beyond the accolades and trophies, I’m proud of myself for sticking to my principles of sincerity and trying to leave the world a better place than I found it. I hope I’ve made you all proud.
So a new life begins off the pitch. I will stay in Como. But without using my boots and shin guards. I hope to be able to tell you more soon.
For now, to the fans of every club I have played for, to my teammates, coaches and staff… from the bottom of my heart, thank you for making this journey more special than my wildest dreams could have ever predicted.
Thanks to football.
With love, Rapha
