At the invitation of the President of the United States of America, Joe Bidenthe President of the Council, Georgia Meloniparticipated today via video link in an event devoted to the economic recovery and reconstruction of Ukraine, in the presence of the President Volodymyr Zelenskythe other G7 nations, the leaders of the European Union and many international partners. On this occasion – according to a note from Palazzo Chigi – a declaration coordinated by the Italian Presidency was adopted by the Group of Seven, also open to the accession of the other States that participated in the event. At the heart of the meeting was the reaffirmation of the common commitment to ensure, bilaterally and through multilateral mechanisms, economic assistance to Ukraine, with particular attention to reforms. Finally, support for the protection and rehabilitation of critical energy infrastructures was reiterated, as well as coordination in the field of reconstruction, also in view of the Conference on the Recovery of Ukraine to be held in Rome in 2025.
Italy will remain at Ukraine’s side for as long as necessary, assured Giorgia Meloni, speaking via video link and addressing President Zelensky directly: “you can count on us,” the Prime Minister said.
The Ukrainian people “remind us what it means to believe and fight for freedom,” Meloni said. “This is a value that we must protect if we want to restore peace in Europe: we have all done our part and now it is time to increase and systematize our efforts,” he said, adding that the joint declaration approved today encouraged by the Italian rotating presidency of the G7, goes in this direction.
The Prime Minister also announced that Italy was about to send a second Samp-T battery to Ukraine. “Like Italy, we have approved nine military aid programs, focused on air defense: and now we are about to send a second Samp-T battery.”
