It was at Square Gambetta, in Carcassonne, that elected officials and communities gathered on this day of remembrance of the victims and heroes of deportation, this Sunday, April 28. Behind the lectern, Dominique Houadria, president of the National Union of Deportees of Aude, gave the only speech of the commemoration. She first called back “the horror and barbarity of the Nazi concentration camp and genocidal systems”. “It is to remember the extermination by the Nazi regime of a part of humanity, targeting Jews and Gypsies of all ages. It is also to remember the deportation of women, men and sometimes of children, considered enemies of the Reich or undesirable, in camps where labor exploitation, terror and the most extreme distress reign.”, she detailed. And to conclude: “Let us remain mobilized against fanaticism, against the resurgence of ideologies of hatred and exclusion, and let us unite in the same tribute.”

Following this speech, elected officials were called to lay a wreath. The ceremony concluded with the singing of the national anthem, The Marseillaise.
