The accident occurred around 4:30 p.m. on the A216, near the Calais port ring road. Two buses carrying middle and high school students, one carrying French people, the other carrying Germans, were involved in an accident with a heavy goods vehicle. We do not yet know the circumstances of the accident.
According to an initial provisional report, the accident caused 26 minor injuries. In total, around a hundred people were involved. The people who were not injured were taken to safety behind the emergency lane. They are waiting for buses that will take them to a room made available by the city of Calais where they will be taken care of.
Around fifty firefighters are currently on site, coming from numerous barracks: Calais, Marck, Marquise, Audruicq, Saint-Omer, Boulogne, Lumbres and Avion. Following this accident, the port ring road is closed between the port and the Marcel Doret roundabout, in the direction from the port towards the A16. Exit is obligatory at the port. Authorities recommend avoiding the area.
