No ransom demand or data theft identified, 90% of operations carried out on Thursday… What we know this Wednesday about the cyberattack at the Cannes hospital

The Simone-Veil hospital in Cannes was the victim of a cyberattack on Tuesday. In a long press release released this Wednesday afternoon, management takes stock of the situation.

“General cybercontainment was one of the first decisions of the crisis unit. All computer access was consequently cut off. Telephony continues to work”, informs the hospital management.

The cyberattack is currently being analyzed in conjunction with expert partners (ANSSI, Cert Santé, Orange CyberDéfense, GHT06).

Ongoing investigation

“There has been no ransom demand or data theft identified at this stage. Investigations remain ongoing“, specifies management.

“Hospital professionals apply so-called degraded procedures (via the use of paper kits). These procedures are more time-consuming and examination delivery times are extended. Everything is done to guarantee the continuation of care in complete safety in all fields of activity (emergencies, medicine, surgery, obstetrics, geriatrics, pediatrics, psychiatry, home hospitalization, rehabilitation)”.

Patients transferred to other establishments

“The establishment works in conjunction with the Regional Health Agency (ARS) and the Territorial Hospital Group (GHT) of the Alpes-Maritimes to regulate patients in the territory according to medical profiles and hospitalization capacities within of the Cannes Simone Veil hospital center and other establishments”, reassures management.

Emergency activity remains active in conjunction with Samu.

90% of operations completed Thursday

“During the day of Tuesday and Wednesday, approximately a third of the non-urgent intervention schedules in the operating room were canceled by medical decision. The operating program will be 90% assured tomorrow.”

Several non-urgent consultations have been canceled. Certain consultations requiring little in terms of IT and concerning known chronic patients were able to be maintained.

The Cannes hospital center has never been the victim of a cyberattack of this type. However, exercises had been carried out in recent months. This allowed the services to be responsive.

“Priority for IT restart is given to software directly linked to the patient care process (computerized patient file and examination results). Return to normal will depend on technical investigations and the necessary catch-up. Feedback of other hospitals that have been the subject of a cyberattack show that this return to normal can take a long time” informs the hospital center.
