Most of the passengers on the Air Europa flight were able to return to Montevideo, their final destination. The flight had been diverted to Brazil due to severe turbulence.

The majority of passengers on the Air Europa flight forced to make an emergency landing in Brazil on Monday arrived at their final destination, Montevideo, on Tuesday. The severe turbulence encountered during the flight left around 40 people with minor injuries. Six of them remained hospitalized, the Spanish airline said.

Air Europa said that the “new plane from Madrid sent expressly” to transfer passengers from flight UX45 arrived in the Uruguayan capital on Tuesday morning.

According to the airline’s statement, 303 passengers took part in the flight, one returned to Spain and six remained under observation in Natal with their companions.

Diverted to Brazil due to severe turbulence

The plane, a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner carrying 325 passengers, had left Madrid on Sunday but “due to the extent of the turbulence, for greater safety” it was diverted to Natal, in the northeast of Brazil, Air Europa said in a statement on Monday.

Brazilian authorities said the injured included Spanish, Argentinian, Uruguayan, Israeli, Bolivian and German nationals. Air Europa said the plane caught in the turbulence would remain in Natal for an “overhaul to determine the extent of the damage.”
