The anti-fascist activist, a controversial candidate under the New Popular Front banner, will face the far right in the second round of the legislative elections.

Catherine Jaouen comes out on top in the first round of the legislative elections in the 1st constituency of Vaucluse this Sunday, June 30. The National Rally candidate received 34.62% of the votes, according to the results published by the Ministry of the Interior.

In the second round, she will face LFI candidate Raphaël Arnault, who came second with 24.76% of the vote. This anti-fascist activist caused controversy after revelations that he is on the “S” list. Local left-wing forces supported another candidate, that of Philippe Pascal, who finished in 3rd position and received 18.27% of the vote.

“I am disappointed because if I had been qualified, I would have been best able to unite and win because I am a moderate,” this former labor inspector and very involved in associations told AFP. local and humanitarian. “But I call to vote for Raphaël Arnault, my only goal is to beat the RN,” he added.

A constituency won by the RN in 2022

In the 2022 election, the far right won this constituency, with Joris Hébrard (RN) overcoming the Nupes candidate, the rebellious Farid Faryssy, in the second round with 51.16% of the vote against 48.84% for his opponent.

As a reminder, during the European elections of June 9, Jordan Bardella’s National Rally list came out on top in this constituency with 31.12% of the vote, ahead of Manon Aubry’s La France Insoumise list (19.43%) and Raphaël Glucksmann’s PS-Place publique list (13.05%).
