Tears for Ronaldo and penalty hero Costa – Portugal’s shaky victory in video
Portugal struggled to reach the quarter-finals of the European Championship against Slovenia in a penalty shootout. Things got dramatic in extra time: Ronaldo burst into tears after missing a penalty, but his Portuguese team celebrated in the end. The highlights in the video.
Portugal is battling against Slovenia for a place in the quarter-finals of the European Championship. Cristiano Ronaldo fails in all his attempts to finally score his first goal of the tournament. But the superstar has not lost his smile yet.
Cristiano Ronaldo positioned himself in his typical position in front of the ball. The superstar stood with his legs apart like a cowboy for the free kick and shouted something into the air before running. Four steps, then he had the ball and chased it past the wall towards the Slovenian goal. His attempt just grazed the crossbar, and the score remained 0:0 in the European Championship round of 16 between his Portuguese team and Slovenia (click here for the live ticker).
Ronaldo tried everything in the first half to score his first goal at the European Championships. In the 13th minute, he narrowly missed a cross from Bernardo Silva. Shortly after his free kick, he missed a high ball in a promising position. His anger at the missed opportunity was evident in many gestures.
In the 39th minute, the 39-year-old took another free kick. The ball was on the left side of the Portuguese attack. When the Slovenians formed a wall of two players, Ronaldo took the opportunity to push the ball a little further forward. But not with referee Daniele Orsato. The Italian sprinted towards Ronaldo, took the ball and dribbled it two meters back to the actual free kick position. Obviously much to Ronaldo’s delight, who greeted the action with a broad smile.

He still has to wait for another record. If he scores another goal at this European Championship, he would be the oldest player in the history of the European Championship to score a goal. He had enough chances to do so in the first half against the Slovenians.
