Nobody would have expected this duel in the round of 16 of the European Championship in Germany. As runners-up in their respective groups, France and Belgium meet in the first round of the knockout phase.
Both the Bleus in the group of death with Austria, the Netherlands and Poland and the Red Devils in a group with Romania, Slovakia and Ukraine were clear favourites. In the end, however, the Austrians and the Romanians emerged as group winners. So today in Düsseldorf there will be a tough duel – and an early exit for one of the favourites.
That would be a huge disappointment for both World Cup finalists France and the Belgians under coach Domenico Tedesco. Especially since Belgium’s golden generation is slowly but surely going downhill. Many of the former stars have already retired or have already passed their 30th birthday. The two superstars Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku are already 33 and 31 years old respectively. France’s stars, apart from Antoine Griezmann (33), are much younger, but they are also under pressure. Another round of 16 exit at the European Championships could be problematic for coach Didier Deschamps.
