Stan Wawrinka (ATP 95) easily made it through the first round at Wimbledon. Solid and diligent, the 39-year-old from Vaud dominated British guest Charles Broom (248) 6-3 7-5 6-4 after 1h49′ of play on court no. 2 at Church Road.

Present for the 18th time in the main draw on the London grass, Stan Wawrinka made his experience count against a player who was playing his second match on the main circuit at 26 years old. Charles Broom was indeed unable to find the necessary relaxation to pocket the second set.

Stan Wawrinka came back from very far in the second set, where he had conceded the break in the second game. He thus dismissed three set points at 2-5 on his engagement then a fourth at 3-5 on the restart, taking advantage of his opponent’s feverishness to almost miraculously restart his actions.

Monfils in the next round

The quarter-finalist of the 2014 and 2015 editions of the London tournament even won eight games in a row to definitively take the upper hand. A brief lapse cost him a break when he was leading 3-0 serve to follow in the third set, but he knew how to tighten his guard to avoid any unpleasant surprises.

Stan Wawrinka, who reached the third round last year on the London grass, was playing for his place in the top 100 of the world rankings. He will try to consolidate it by reaching the last 16 once again. To do so, he will have to beat the Frenchman Gaël Monfils (33), semi-finalist in Majorca last week.
