Alipay+ has now announced that transactions in Germany increased by 67 percent during the opening week of UEFA Euro 2024 from June 13 to June 19, 2024. Alipay+, official sponsor of UEFA Euro 2024, provides a platform for cross-border mobile payment and digitization technologies and currently supports 30 global e-wallets and banking apps.

The number of customers paying with Alipay+ partner e-wallets in the opening week increased by 59 percent compared to the previous week, and the average transaction value increased by 56 percent, allowing local small and medium-sized enterprises in areas such as hospitality, retail, travel and other segments to benefit from the influx of large numbers of tourists.

E-Wallets: Tourists at the European Football Championship drive usage

Alipay+ transactions also increased outside Germany: in the opening week, they increased by 13 percent across Europe compared to the previous week, when fans gathered in pubs, bars and hotels across the continent to watch the opening matches. Compared to 2023, the number of tourists paying with Alipay+ increased by 29 percent. This development reflects the increase in international tourism from China and other Asian countries, as well as the growing popularity of Europe as a travel destination since the pandemic. Compared to the previous week, Alipay+ recorded an increase of 11 percent.

Local retailers benefit from the European Football Championship

Alipay+ has now integrated over 400,000 merchants in Europe, of which over 120,000 are in the DACH region alone. Small and medium-sized companies in particular benefit from the integration of Alipay+ e-wallets as a payment option. These include the Farina Fragrance Museum in Cologne, founded in 1709, one of the oldest perfume houses in the world and a popular attraction for international tourists. Louise Farina, who runs the museum in the ninth generation, shares her experiences during the European Football Championship: “It’s great to experience the electrifying energy in Cologne when football fans from all over the world visit our museum. The possibility of offering Alipay+ as a payment option is a great relief, especially for tourists from Asia, as they represent a significant target group who like to purchase our famous fragrances.”

Zhang Liang Malatang Spicy Hot Pot in Düsseldorf is a popular destination for international guests for lunch and dinner, offering a diverse selection of Asian cuisine. Restaurant owner Muxin Guo explains: “Every day, we welcome guests from China and many other Asian countries who appreciate paying with their preferred e-wallets from their home country. In a city known for its excellent Asian cuisine, offering Alipay+ as an international payment method is an additional incentive for visitors.”

Growing interest in mobile e-wallets

The 15 mobile partners that Alipay+ supports in Germany include Alipay (Mainland China), AlipayHK (Hong Kong SAR, China), MPay (Macao SAR, China), Touch’n Go eWallet and MyPB by Public Bank Berhad (Malaysia), Hipay (Mongolia), GCash (Philippines), OCBC Digital and Changi Pay (Singapore), TrueMoney (Thailand), Tinaba (Italy), Bluecode (Germany and Austria) and Kakao Pay, Naver Pay and Toss Pay (South Korea).

Pietro Candela, General Manager for Europe at Alipay+, adds: “The Euro is just one example of the growing interest of young Asian mobile app users in immersive and experience-oriented travel. We will continue to expand our cooperation with our partners, such as leading e-wallet and mobile banking providers in Asia. With Alipay+, we want to develop flexible and SME-friendly digital solutions that help German and European companies reach the new generation of digitally savvy travelers.”
