Gelsenkirchen trembles before EM hooligans – suddenly a crazy message goes around

Well? What kind of strange news is going around? During the European Championship, thousands of people meet all over Germany to enjoy the football atmosphere and cheer on their team in the stadium or at public viewings. Football, beer and lots of people – that could well lead to the odd heated discussion or even physical altercation at the four host cities in North Rhine-Westphalia, including Gelsenkirchen. The police in Germany are deployed with thousands of officers every day to ensure the necessary security.

Nevertheless, a bizarre report is making the rounds after the Germany match on Friday (June 14). According to it, a police officer from Gelsenkirchen is said to have spoken out in favor of the consumption of cannabis and against alcohol during the tournament to the British newspaper “The Sun”. The police are now providing clarity.

Gelsenkirchen: Would you rather smoke weed than drink?

According to the British tabloid newspaper “The Sun”, a spokesman for the Gelsenkirchen police has commented on the issue of cannabis consumption during the tournament in Germany. After all, weed is now legal here, which is why international fans are of course allowed to smoke a joint here. In order to prevent aggressive moods, the police spokesman also said: “Alcohol consumption can make people more aggressive, while smoking cannabis puts people in a relaxed mood.” Was that a recommendation to smoke weed?

Some German media have already spread the claim that the police have called for people to consume cannabis instead of alcohol. The Gelsenkirchen police responded immediately to this accusation. “This misinformation comes from a single English journalist who misquoted a Gelsenkirchen police spokesman,” it is clarified in an official press release.

Police chief Peter Both also said: “The police are ensuring the safety of fans during the European Football Championship and are reacting to aggressive groups that are causing trouble, regardless of the use of drugs.” The Gelsenkirchen police are expressly urging football fans not to smoke weed. According to them, the quote was taken out of context in the interview.

International fans must also abide by our rules. Smoking weed is not permitted at events where children and young people are expected to attend. For EURO 2024, for example, this means that smoking cannabis is not permitted at the fan meeting points, in the fan zone or on the stadium grounds.
