This Sunday, June 30, the current Prime Minister takes the lead in the first round of the legislative elections. He will face the candidate of the united left, Cécile Soubelet, in the second round on July 7.

His first place is relatively comfortable, but the current Prime Minister has a high stakes. Gabriel Attal came out on top in the first round of the legislative elections this Sunday, June 30, in the Hauts-de-Seine constituency.

With 43.85% of the votes, he is not as comfortable as in 2022 for the second round on July 7. Only eight points separate him from the socialist candidate, Cécile Soubelet. Invested under the banner of the united left, called the New Popular Front, the latter qualified with 35.53% of the votes cast.

A non-aggression pact between the local right and the presidential majority had been sealed for this election, but the Republicans are causing disorder. Two candidates were nominated by the disunited party: Clément Perrin, by the interim leadership and Sébastien Laye, chosen by Éric Ciotti and dubbed by the National Rally. Neither of the two, however, eliminated this Sunday with 5.08 and 13.21% of the votes respectively, will overshadow the Prime Minister.

Big victory in 2022

In the 2022 legislative elections, Gabriel Attal won hands down (60% of the votes in the second round) against this same socialist, then invested under the colors of the united left parties of the time, the Nupes. In the first round of the 2022 election, he totaled 48.06% of the votes against 30.75% for the Nupes.

Two years later, the duo clashed again. Second round facing the union of the left for the man who has since become the youngest head of government of the Fifth Republic. This time, however, the gap is smaller between them than in 2022.

A Prime Minister-Candidate

The Matignon resident, who has distinguished himself by his constant presence on all crisis grounds since his appointment last January, twice faced the opposition of the RN and the New Popular Front in debate a few days before the first round, on June 25 and 27.

For this second round, faced with a narrower gap with the candidate of the united left, Cécile Soubelet, the Prime Minister can probably count on a transfer of votes from the right. Some socialists will also be tempted to vote more to the center than to their left. A reserve of voters who risk being lacking when invested by the New Popular Front.

Gabriel Attal, to emerge victorious, will however have to deal with the record of the policies of his heavily criticized camp. And an aura of the Macronist project at half mast.

What were the results at the Europeans?

Hauts-de-Seine is one of the departments where the Macron camp’s results in the European elections in June were better than at the national level.

In the June 9 vote, in this constituency, Renaissance came out on top with 21% of the vote. Closely followed by the PS list and Place publique, with 19.64% of the vote and LFI at 13.33%.

A vacant seat at Matignon in the event of defeat?

On July 7, if he loses, Gabriel Attal will probably have to leave his post as head of government. In the event of an absolute majority for one of the two oppositions, Emmanuel Macron will probably have to deal with a new Prime Minister from the opposing winning camp.

The president of the National Rally and young leader of the June European elections, Jordan Bardella, is officially eyeing the possible vacancy of the seat at the end of the second round of the legislative elections. He has already declared that he would be future head of government if the Lepenist party obtains an absolute majority.

On the left, we are careful not to mention the name of Gabriel Attal’s predecessor for the moment. For fear of waving the red rag in front of the eyes of the most moderate voters if Matignon rhymes with Mélenchon.
