Former Calais boxer Thierry Jacob, super bantamweight world champion in 1992, died Friday at the age of 59 following an illness, announced the mayor of Calais Natacha Bouchart.
“We start this day with sad news,” wrote the Calais councilor in a publication on Facebook. “Thierry Jacob died last night, so young… We unfortunately knew he was suffering for a while.”
In addition to his world champion title acquired on points in Calais in March 1992 at the expense of the Mexican Daniel Zaragoza, the 1.69 boxer was EBU European champion (1990 and 1991). He lost his WBC world belt in his first defense, in June 1992 in New York State, against the American Tracy Harris Patterson, when the referee stopped it in the second round.
A highly appreciated personality from Calais, Thierry Jacob, who boxed professionally from 1984 to 1994 with a record of 39 victories and six defeats, was also the father of Romain Jacob, French super-featherweight champion from 2011 to 2013, notably.
