The earth shook very early this Monday, December 16 in Chlef. The Center for Research in Astronomy, Astrophysics and Geophysics (Craag) recorded an earthquake measuring 4.9 degrees on the open Richter scale this Monday at 1:09 a.m.
This is the strongest earthquake recorded in Algeria since the start of 2024.
The earthquake was located 3 km north of Zeboudja, a town of 23,000 inhabitants located 233 km west of Algiers.
According to Chlef Radio, Civil Protection did not carry out any intervention on the ground, 40 minutes after the earthquake, which means that no major material damage or casualties were recorded.
An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.9 degrees is considered a medium intensity earthquake. In such a situation, vulnerable houses and buildings may be affected.

This earthquake comes a few days after the magnitude 4 earthquake which struck the town of Bourkika in the wilaya of Tipaza on Tuesday, December 10 at 5:02 a.m. An earthquake which caused no damage or victims.
In four months, 10 earthquakes of low to medium magnitude have been recorded in different regions of northern Algeria, three of which have magnitudes of 4 and above. The other seven are between 3 degrees and 4 degrees.
The strongest shook the town of Zeboudja in Chlef this Monday morning. On October 10, a 4.3 degree earthquake struck the Azeffoun region on the eastern coast of Tizi-Ouzou, without causing any casualties.
Since the start of the year, Algeria has recorded 9 earthquakes of magnitude greater than 4 degrees. First in Relizane on January 13 (4.3 degrees), then Mascara on February 14 (4.5 degrees), M'sila on March 9 (4.3 degrees), M'sila on April 20 (4 .2 degrees), June 25 in Jijel (4 degrees), Médéa on August 3 (4.2 degrees), Tizi-Ouzou on October 10 (4.3 degrees), December 10 in Tipaza (4 degrees) and this Monday, December 16 in Chlef (4.9 degrees).
