Sydney Sweeney is letting the world know that she sees the trolls’ body-shaming comments, and she’s already working on herself.
On Saturday, the actress shared a video on Instagram that begins with a compilation of posts about her figure, from people calling her a “butterface,” to others saying that she should get in the gym because of her figure.
The latter half of the video shows Sweeney doing just that: hitting the gym. She pushes tires, does crunches on a machine, and even hops in the boxing ring to let loose flurries of punches. The video ends with her flexing her gains so far in the mirror.
Sweeney’s training regimen comes ahead of her playing boxing icon Christy Martin in a biopic from Oz filmmaker David Michôd. In October, Sweeney opened up on Instagram about getting ready for the role.
“I’ve been immersed in training to bring to life the story of an incredible woman—a true champion who fought battles both inside and outside the ring,” Sweeney wrote alongside pictures of her on the movie’s set.
“Her journey is a testament to resilience, strength, and hope, and I’m honored to step into her shoes to share her powerful story with you all.”
Sweeney has dealt with online critics of her looks over the years. In 2021, she posted a video addressing her haters after she discovered that she was trending on X for “being ugly.”
“I know everyone says, ‘You can’t read things,’ and ‘You shouldn’t read things,’ but like, I’m a fucking person,” she said at the time. “I think it’s really important for people to see how words actually affect people.”
Earlier this year, Sweeney spoke about her belief that the industry talk of women empowering each other is “fake” after she herself experienced disparaging remarks out of nowhere from Hollywood producer Carol Baum.
“It’s very disheartening to see women tear other women down, especially when women who are successful in other avenues of their industry see younger talent working really hard—hoping to achieve whatever dreams that they may have—and then trying to bash and discredit any work that they’ve done,” Sweeney said. “This entire industry, all people say is ‘Women empowering other women.’ None of it’s happening.”
