The ranking
– Big evening for the Spurs and Victor Wembanyama. Against the Kings, in Sacramento, the Texans won for the 6th time in 7 matches, beating their franchise record at 3 pts (23 baskets), and the Frenchman signed his first triple-double of the season (34 points, 13 rebounds, 11 assists and 3 blocks at 11/17). Trailing by 17 points at the start of the match, the Spurs once again did not give up and came back with long distance shots (5 for Wembanyama). While the game was close, Victor Wembanyama scored 13 points in the 4th quarter, before Keldon Johnson and Chris Paul finished the job on the line in the final seconds.
The Kings are not succeeding this year and we cannot say that the mayonnaise has completely taken with this squad to which DeMar DeRozan has been added.
– The shock of the Eastern Conference turned in favor of the Cavs, who took their revenge (115-111) on the Celtics and ended their series of 7 consecutive victories. The first team to beat Cleveland this season, Boston had to play without Jaylen Brown and Derrick White, but still led until a somewhat apocalyptic 4th quarter. The Cavs turned things around when they trailed by 12 points at the start of the final quarter. Donovan Mitchellin search of his somewhat lost address recently, was crucial by scoring 20 of his 35 points over this period, without missing a single shot (6/6, including 4/4 at 3 points).
The Cavs sit at the top of the Eastern Conference with 18 wins and 3 losses after this coup.
– Houston continues to show its teeth to the West and took down the leader of the Conference, Oklahoma City, on Sunday (119-116). At the end of a close match, two men stood out for the Rockets: Fred VanVleetauthor of 38 points and two shots to secure the victory, and Dillon Brooks, who took the Texans into the lead with 33 seconds remaining. Jalen Williams brought OKC within 1 point with 2.4 seconds left, but the Thunder couldn't regain control. Alperen Sengun went one step closer to a triple-double (20 pts, 14 rebounds, 9 asts).
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (32 pts) signed a fourth consecutive game with 30 points or more, but that did not prevent Houston from returning neck and neck to second place in the Conference.
– And 6 for Orlando, who won in Brooklyn with 20 points from Franz Wagner, in a match which will not go down in history but consolidates the Magic's place on the podium in the East.
– Trailing by 19 points in the first half, the Grizzlies took advantage of the Pacers' defensive generosity to reverse the situation and score 136 points, to reap a 6th consecutive victory and move into 3rd place in the West. Jaren Jackson Jr (25 pts, 8 rbds, 3 blks), Ja Morant (19 pts, 8 asts) and the Smart-Bane pair (16 pts each) were driving forces to confirm the good dynamic of a team which is not making noise but is quietly regaining its place in the Western Conference.
Tyrese Haliburton (8 pts, 7 asts) is still in difficulty away from home and is struggling to find his best level.
– The Knicks did the job at home against New Orleans (118-85) by inflicting an 8th defeat in a row on the unfortunate Pelicans. Mikal Bridges rebounded after being benched at the end of the last match. The former Suns and Nets winger scored 31 points, supported by Karl-Antony Towns (14 pts, 19 rebounds) in particular. This is the 7th victory in 10 matches for New York where Pacôme Dadiet was sent to the G-League for the first time this season.
– Luka Doncic made a winning return last night after five matches of absence to treat his wrist. The Mavs won in Portland (137-131) in a match that was undoubtedly a little too disjointed in the eyes of Jason Kidd, but which led to a fourth consecutive success for the unfortunate finalists of 2024. Doncic, who had to compose without Kyrie Irving, left to rest to treat his shoulder, was not idle and finished with 36 points, 13 assists, 7 rebounds and 3 interceptions.
The Mavs were missing Kyrie Irving, who had 30 points in a 106-94 win Saturday over the Utah Jazz, because of a sore shoulder. The Mavs were also without Klay Thompson (left foot), Dereck Lively II (right knee) and Naji Marshall (illness).
Anfernee Simons had 27 points, including 24 in the third quarter, for the Blazers.
– Bad interpretation of the game or tanking pushed to its climax? The fact remains that Will Hardy took a timeout in the very last seconds of the match between the Jazz and the Lakers, while his player Collin Sexton was launched to score the winning basket. The head of the former Cavs player says a lot, especially since coming out of timeout, he missed his reception and was unable to get the shot he wanted…
Coming back to the match, Los Angeles scared itself but LeBron James (27 pts, 14 asts) took things in hand in the 4th quarter. Clumsy at 3 points (0/9), the King weighed differently and carried the team with Anthony Davis (33 pts) to hang on to 6th place in the West.
– Just behind the Lakers, we find their neighbors the Clippers, who pulled off a nice coup by dominating Denver (126-122). Los Angeles achieved a deserved and well-constructed success, with a James Harden always so dashing with the baton. The former MVP, helped by Norman Powell (28 pts) scored 39 points with 11 assists and 9 rebounds, but also a 13/13 on the line recalling his finest hours. The triple-double of Nikola Jokic (28 pts, 14 rebounds, 11 asts) was not enough for the Nuggets.
– Led by RJ Barrett (37 pts) and Scottie Barnes (23 pts), the Raptors took the scalp of the Heat in Ontario (119-116), where they have been positive (5-4) since the start of the season. Barrett was sparkling in attack with a 15/20 and a flawless line with 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Miami missed the boat again and still hasn't won three times in a row this season.
