The technical inspection for type L vehicles (two or three wheels and motorized quadricycle) has done well since its obligation in April 2024.

According to data obtained by actu.fr with various center franchises, more than a quarter of the two-wheeler fleet has already presented itself to an inspector in six months. We are far from the boycott hoped for by the Federation of Angry Bikers (FFMC).

These million road users may have done well to go there as soon as the test was required. According to our reports, the price of technical inspection could well climb 2025.

How much does technical inspection cost in 2024?

According to the various testimonies from centers or bikers, the FFMC has made its calculations. The technical inspection would cost 65/70 euros on average. “We have a range which goes from 45 to 100 euros”, specifies Christophe Boulais, deputy coordinator at the national office of the FFMC, for a previous article for actu.fr.

An inevitable increase in price

It's a controller from a Self-Security center in (Bouches-du-Rhône) who puts the tip in our ear. While the technical inspection for L vehicles costs between 65 and 75 euros in his center, he tells us he fears an increase in prices.

To be able to carry out checks on two-wheelers, the centers have already had to invest this year, particularly in wheel blocks and crutches. “There were some for less than 500 euros», Estimates the Marseille controller. In 2025, it will be more in thousands of euros that we will have to count.

Because in 2025, the technical inspection of L categories is evolving, and new inspection elements will be added to the long list, currently made up of 80 points.

Also, the central technical body (Utac), which reports to the Ministry of Transport, has defined specifications setting out the new equipment to be obtained to comply with the decree of October 2023, making technical inspection compulsory for both wheels.

The noise pollution emitted by a vehicle must, for example, be measured from 1ᵉʳ March 2025 as indicated by the National Automobile Federation (FNA) on its site. To do this, garages will have to invest in a sound level meter.

Other new control element from June 1, 2025 this time: check that the moped engines are not unrestrained. For that, it is a decelerometerthat it is necessary.

Two new tools that all centers will therefore have to obtain. However, we will have to put our hands in our pockets. Much more than for crutches and wheel blocks in 2024.

“It takes 5,000 euros for the sound level meter and 5,000 euros for the decelerometer,” says Mickael Tirel, sales director of Autosécurité (more than 900 control centers in ), contacted by actu.fr. Total envelope: 10,000 euros.

Due to the deadlines being considered too short, the technical centers are not able to turn to other manufacturers who could, by also starting to produce sound level meters and decelerometers, bring prices into play.

An unprofitable investment

But there is little chance of competitors emerging and lowering the bill.

For the sales director, investing in new equipment in 2025, to the tune of 10,000 euros, would not necessarily be profitable.

After a year in 2024 where we have already had to invest in training, crutches, wheel blocks… Such an investment in 2025 for four mopeds checked per month is not financially interesting.

The problem therefore: the size of the two-wheeler fleet. Four million vehicles, compared to nearly 39 million cars on the road in 2023, according to figures from the Ministry of Ecological Transition.

“For cars, we can stay at the same price even if we invest, because we will be able to amortize, but given the motorcycle fleet, it is not as obvious,” adds the Marseille controller.

But then, how much will technical inspection cost in 2025?

We come to the question that may interest you. You will have understood, there should be an increase, but by how much?

Today, Autosécurité is waiting to know the prices that the manufacturers will set, so it is difficult to have a precise idea of ​​the increase. “We are talking about four or five euros», imagines Mickael Tirel. What is certain is thatthere will indeed be a “price change” for the entire subsidiary.

The increase in a tax to make nothing better

Training costs in 2024, new investments in 2025… and also tax increases. Indeed, next year, another bad news awaits the centers: the redevance OTCa tax that centers must pay on each technical inspection carried out.In 2025, it increases and takes a few cents.

A decree of October 21, 2024 sets its new amount. From January 1, 2025, it will increase from 34 cents including tax to 42 cents excluding tax. Enough to weigh a little more on the finances of the centers.

Towards a broader boycott in 2025?

According to reports from Christophe Boulais, coordinator at the national office of the FFMC, the driving force behind the bikers' protests, controllers could well not request their approval for 2025. “This is not a profitable regulation,” he analyzes for actu.fr.

More approved centers, more technical inspection. The price increase is a reason to believe that the boycott could work.
