Environment Canada monitors developing system, Weyburn could be impacted – DiscoverWeyburn.com

While there have been no official measurements of snowfall for Weyburn after the weekend, it was pretty evident the city received a good amount, with unofficial measurements in some areas of up to six centimetres. In all, it amounted to 11.3 millimetres of precipitation, according to the official data from Environment Canada.

While residents are finishing up the last little bit of clean-up from the snow, there could be more on the way in the coming days, as another system comes up from the United States.

“The system that went through on the weekend was just a little introduction to winter, and this is kind of the big show,” described Shannon Moody, a meteorologist with Environment Canada. The system is bringing more wintry weather to eastern Saskatchewan and western Manitoba. Rain, snow, the possibility of freezing rain, and high winds are all expected with some of it starting as early as this afternoon.

Environment Canada issued a winter storm watch for much of eastern Saskatchewan, but Weyburn was not included in the initial advisory. This doesn’t mean Weyburn is out of the woods, though.

“(You’re) really on the edge of the system, but with the system still developing and tacking northward, there could certainly be changes in the track,” Moody continued. “So, there could be more or less snow and precipitation in Weyburn than is currently in the forecast.”

The forecast is calling for a chance of showers in Weyburn starting today, with wet snow overnight and winds gusting up to 50 kilometres an hour from the northwest. More snow and blowing snow – around 2-4 centimetres – is expected tomorrow with the winds gusting up to 70 kilometres an hour.

“This is actually pretty late,” Moody added. “We usually have had a system like this go through by now.”

As for what is behind the system, temperatures are expected to be around -8° during the day from Wednesday onwards. It doesn’t mean we will be in the full grips of winter, though.

“I know we’ve been spoiled quite a bit this fall with above-normal temperatures, and it’s really been quite a beautiful fall,” Moody said. “For the short term, certainly it looks like that after the system it’s going to be quite cooler, but there’s always hope, right?”
