From 4:48 p.m. Friday, November 8, women will start working for free until the end of 2024. This is the symbolic countdown of the feminist collective Les Glorieuses, which wishes to highlight that the wage gap between women and men remains important.
Women are paid 13.9% less than men: “It shocks me, I didn't expect a figure of 14%. We don't know why actually. We work like men so why does a man have to earn more than a woman?”explains a passerby. An employee deplores that her salary was lower than that of her male colleagues with equal skills: “Indeed, between a man and a woman, gardener salaries are not equal. There can be a difference of between 250 euros and 1,000 euros.”
On average in France, a man earns 2,898 euros net per month compared to 2,508 for a woman. Year after year, the gap narrows only very slowly. Among the explanations, women are often forced to work part-time, they have less easy access to management and above all, they are often confined to the least valued sectors.
