“It’s not every day!” »: in Saint-Brieuc with the first gourmands of the Scallop Festival

9 a.m., at the port of Légué, the tide is still high. The sun is finishing rising, the water is calm on this Saturday, October 19. Around twenty people are already present. They wait patiently to recover their treasures, that was the promise of the Scallop Festival. About ten minutes later, there are the boats approaching.

First the Jack’s, which we hear sounding its horn, then the Ki Dour Mor, the Tite Thérèse and finally the Ar Levenez. The four shellfish dock at the port to the delight of their spectators: “We wanted to see them arrive, it’s not every day! », exclaims Pascale. Those who were early and motivated were able to witness the beautiful spectacle offered by these fishing boats.

That’s it, the sale is launched, the port fills with new customers and the fishermen leave their cargo at the foot of their boat. Shellfish lovers flock to collect their orders directly from the fishermen. The most conscientious placed their order the day before, the others come to see if any specials are available for them.

“I didn’t book online, it’s not really my thing,” explains Éric. “I came to see if there was any reduction and I’m so happy, I was able to gain back 10 kg! », he continues, proudly brandishing his net. Small recipe books are also distributed to know the different ways to enjoy the treasure contained in the shell. Eric does not fail to seize it.

“For Christmas, we should have something to do!” »

Delighted smiles appear on the faces of those who have finally recovered their precious one. “It’s always a pleasure to be able to collect your order directly from the fisherman,” Moses and Pascale enthuse. Customers parade, chatting happily with sailors happy to provide beautiful shells. “They are bigger than usual, three millimeters longer! », describes Renaud, fisherman from Ar Levenez. “Surely the nuts they contain too!” » he supposes.

This Saturday morning, it is possible to collect red bags of 10 kg and yellow bags of 20 kg. Nathalie and Philippe Guillaumard favored the large format: “It’s for Christmas, we should have something to do”. Scallops are a precious dish that can be appreciated for holidays like Christmas. Nathalie and Philippe did not miss this great opportunity to obtain them in bulk and at the price of €3.50 per kilo.

For those who were not foresighted in pre-ordering, there remained the possibility of unfulfilled orders. They were to be put back on sale in the afternoon. Shelled shells are also sold to order throughout the day. Last chance for the less rigorous to recover the precious Saint-Jacques.

During the day, different activities highlight the shell. The fishermen show off their boats. Cooks give culinary demonstrations and offer tastings of sweet or savory scallops. The Saint-Brieuc Bay tourist office is also offering a second visit to the Port du Légué this Sunday. A craft market has also been set up near Carré Rosengart. This weekend, there is something to do to properly celebrate “wearing the shell”.
