Clashes on the sidelines of the commemorations of the attack of October 7, 2023

Many cities across Europe held commemorations on Monday to remember the 1,200 civilians killed by Hamas on October 7, 2023 and the hostages still being held by the militant group.

Dutch police on Monday objected to a group of pro-Palestinian demonstrators in Amsterdam, where a pro-Israeli demonstration was taking place simultaneously in tribute to the victims of the Hamas attack of October 7, 2023which sparked the war in Gaza.

One year ago today, the Palestinian militant group killed nearly 1,200 civilians and took 251 hostages in an attack on the Nova festival in southern Israel.

Over the past year, the Israeli offensive in Gaza has caused more than 42,000 victims, according to the Palestinian Authority.

Cities across Europe commemorate the October 7 attacks

Many cities in Europe have organized commemorative events Monday to remember the victims of the Hamas attack and those taken hostage by the militant group a year ago.

In Berlin, a commemoration ceremony was held at the Chabad synagogue, where survivors of the attack gathered to honor their loved ones killed by Hamas, while calling for continued efforts to free the remaining hostages.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni attended a ceremony at Rome’s main synagogue. While affirming Israel’s right to live in security within its borders, she insisted on respect for international law and deplored the devastation caused by Israeli forces in Gaza.

She claims that Palestinians in Gaza have been “double victims: first of the cynicism of Hamas, which uses them as human shields, and then of Israeli military operations”.

In , the streets of displayed the faces of Hamas hostages this Monday on posters put up during the night by activists from the “Tous 7 October” association.

“What is important is to humanize these hostages, to keep them in the public eye”says Jean-David Ichay, the president of the association.

94 hostages out of 251 captured a year ago are still being held in Gaza.
