Around a month ago, Switzerland and the EU agreed on a new contract package. The positions are far apart: At the Greens ‘delegates’ meeting in Neuchâtel, party president Lisa Mazzone has strongly made up for the EU for a closer connection between Switzerland – while the SVP warns against a loss of freedom at its assembly of delegates in Balsthal.

Ring bells against “loss of freedom”

The SVP heralds the fight against the contracts with the EU. In the truest sense of the word: a group of treichler follows SVP overpower Christoph Blocher when he walks through the hall to the lectern. They should pass the evil spirits. By this he means those in Bundesbern who want a stronger connection between Switzerland to the EU. “We have been running the fight for 40 years and, as far as the EU is concerned, with success,” said Blocher. In the economy, he sees more and more allies today.

In some ways, Blocher is right: part of the economy is on the side of the SVP. However, export -oriented industries and the Economiesuisse Wirtschaftsdachverband are emphasized for the contracts with the EU.

Nevertheless, National Councilor Franz Grüter is also confident about the SVP’s anti-EU fight: “You can see what the condition of the European Union is.” The people in our country would not want to join such a bureaucratic monster.

Divided values as a bulwark for the Greens

Party President Lisa Mazzone also spoke clear words at the Greens’ assembly of delegates. She emphasized the importance of the contracts by referring to the world situation: «Especially now that America is sounding first, we have to say loudly and clearly that Europe is our bulwark. We share a number of values: democracy, human rights, independence of the judiciary – and we want to defend them together, »says Mazzone.

And this despite the fact that the left parties are committed to keeping the unions and they also see construction sites in the contracts: wage protection must be guaranteed, Mazzone emphasizes.

EU debate flared up

The party president says it is important that the Greens are clearly committed to the contracts with the EU from the start: «Because the debate was not led by the Federal Council for years! He bears a huge responsibility that you didn’t really talk about it for years. » It is important that you now show why this closer relationship is important. Mazzone emphasizes: “You have to get these contracts through, but with clear wage protection contracts.”

The debate is now being held hot again. Both still have a lot of time until the voting struggle. The contracts should not come to the urn until 2028.
