This year’s season of the popular jungle camp has finally begun. But one candidate is already showing that he may not be up to the challenges of camp life. Jürgen Hingsen (66), who describes himself as “camp grandpa” in his clip, is elected first team boss – although he doesn’t seem to take his tasks too seriously. Under the leadership of the former decathlon star, the tasks are neither distributed nor completed. Instead, after yawning several times, he simply goes to sleep. “That was exhausting,” emphasized the Olympic silver medalist beforehand. The next day he elects Nina Bott (47) as the next “president of the jungle camp”, who appears to be far more motivated than her predecessor.
The campers initially appeared to be quite sure that the former athlete was a born team boss or “childminder”, as Sam Dylan (33) described the role. “Jürgen is a machine,” said fellow campaigner Timur Ülker (35). Nobody expected him to withdraw from the affair so quietly and secretly and go to bed – and that doesn’t seem to suit fellow jungler Maurice Dziwak (26) either. “The pilot is the last to leave the sinking plane”says the self-proclaimed lion. And the viewers? They seem amused by the Duisburg native’s decision. “A good boss lets the others punch each other in the mouth until things calm down. I think Jürgen “It’s doing a good job by just sleeping in it,” one user noted X an.
The 66-year-old had made a promising announcement in advance Jungle camp to do it properly – and also to make one or two announcements. “Sport shapes us. There’s no complaining, the only thing that matters is: close your eyes and push through,” emphasized Jürgen in conversation with RTL and added: “I can also be strict and show where the hammer is.” Whether the probably most successful German athlete of the 80s will actually implement this in the coming days remains to be seen.
