GETTING A LITTLE TASTE OF THAT BEHIND THE SCENES HERE RIGHT NOW. BUT FIRST I WANT TO SHOW YOU SOMETHING THAT I’VE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO SHOW YOU BEFORE. AND HARDLY ANY METEOROLOGIST HAS BEEN ABLE TO SHOW YOU THE VISIBLE SATELLITE IMAGERY. WE WERE TRACKING CLOUDS HERE, BUT AT THE BEGINNING OF THIS, THERE’S. THE SUN IS NOW BEGINNING TO SET. AT LEAST AT THIS TIME IN THE SKY. YOU’LL START TO SEE THIS BRIGHT WHITE AND WE’LL GO BACK SO WE CAN SEE A LITTLE BIT EARLIER IN THE DAY. BUT ALL THIS BRIGHT WHITE THAT’S SHOWN RIGHT HERE, THAT’S NOT MOVING. THOSE AREN’T CLOUDS. THAT IS THE SNOW PACK. AND I’VE OUTLINED IT HERE FOR YOU. SNOW PACK THAT BEGINS ALL THE WAY TO HOUSTON, GALVESTON REGION HUGS THE COAST THROUGH PENSACOLA, PENSACOLA BEACH. IF YOU HADN’T SEEN THE SNOWFALL ON THE BEACH. INCREDIBLE. SO HERE’S WHERE WE STAND AT THIS TIME. THAT’S WHAT I REALLY WOULD LIKE TO SEE IS DRY PAVEMENT ON THE CAUSEWAY. AND YOU SEE THAT ON BOTH SIDES OF IT HERE. ONE OF THE MAIN REASONS FOR THAT, WHICH IS THAT, YOU KNOW, YOUR WATER TEMPERATURES ARE ACTUALLY AROUND 50. SO AT LAST CHECK THAT I HAD I WANT TO GO GET THE EXACT THING ABOUT THAT AND WHERE THEY ARE, BUT THEN YOU’VE ACTUALLY GOT THAT RELATIVE WARMTH THAT’S HELPING OUT AND HELPING TO WARM THAT BRIDGE FROM EVEN EVERY DIRECTION. SON FROM DOWN. AND THEN THE WARMTH THERE. THIS IS NOT GOOD, THOUGH. IT IS GOOD TO BE GETTING AROUND TODAY. FOUR WHEEL DRIVE AND EVEN SOME FRONT WHEEL DRIVE CARS SHOULD BE ABLE TO MAKE IT THROUGH. BUT THIS IS ALL GOING TO BE FREEZING UP LATER ON TONIGHT. THAT’S NOT GOING AWAY ANYTIME SOON. YOU GOT TO COMPLETELY REMOVE THAT. OF COURSE, WE ARE NOT USED TO SEEING SNOW ON TOP OF THE SUPERDOME. THAT’S CRAZY. SMOOTHIE KING CENTER HERE TO METEOROLOGIST DEREK SIBLEY SHOWING YOU AGAIN THAT LIST OF THE HIGHEST SNOW TOTALS IN REFERENCE TO WHERE THEY ARE HERE TO DEREK. TAKE IT AWAY. ALL RIGHT DEVIN THANKS FOR THAT. SO YEAH I JUST WANT TO QUICKLY SHOW YOU THE SOME OF THOSE HIGHER TOTALS THAT WE HAD HERE IN SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA. AND WE’LL BE ABLE TO GO AHEAD AND SHOW THAT HERE FOR YOU AS OF RIGHT NOW, AND SHOW YOU SOME OF THOSE HIGHER TOTALS THAT WE HAD. HERE. CHECK THIS OUT. I MEAN, WE JUST ACTUALLY FINISHED THIS HERE TODAY JUST BEFORE THE 4:00 HOUR. AND REALLY NEW Orleans STILL THE HIGHER TOTAL HERE AROUND TEN INCHES AND A LOT OF LOCATIONS SAW BETWEEN THAT 4 TO 8 INCH MARK IF NOT HIGHER. KIND OF MISSING SOME OF THOSE TOTALS TOWARDS GRAND ISLE AND DOWN TOWARDS BOOTHVILLE. BUT WE ACTUALLY GO AHEAD AND USE AN ESTIMATION HERE WITH SEVEN INCHES FOR GRAND ISLE, ONE AND A HALF THERE FOR AREAS LIKE BOOTHVILLE HERE TO NOW. NEXT THING I DO WANT TO GO AHEAD AND SHOW YOU SOME OF THOSE HIGHER TOTALS HERE, JUST TO GENERALIZE, SUMMARIZE EVERYTHING OVER TEN INCHES THERE IN LAROSE METAIRIE NEW ORLEANS, DES ALLEMANDS. AND HERE AT WDSU, WE ACTUALLY PICKED UP TEN INCHES OF SNOW HERE TOO, WITH CHALMETTE NOT TOO FAR FROM THAT AT AROUND 9.5IN HERE TOO. ALL RIGHT. LET’S TALK ABOUT SOME OF THE TIPS HERE THAT YOU COULD BE DOING. JUST MAKE SURE THAT YOU CLEAR AS MUCH OF THE SNOW AS YOU POSSIBLY CAN, BECAUSE REMEMBER WE’RE GOING THROUGH ANOTHER REFREEZE TONIGHT. DEVON LUCIE IS GOING TO BE TALKING ABOUT THAT. AND OF COURSE, MAKE SURE TO RUN YOUR FAUCETS AGAIN TONIGHT TO AVOID IT FROM ACTUALLY COMPLETELY FREEZING. YOU WANT TO KEEP THAT RUNNING STEADY AND AVOID AS MUCH AS YOU CAN. IF YOU HAVE TO WALK VERY CAREFULLY NEAR THOSE ICY CONDITIONS, BECAUSE YOU COULD EASILY FALL. IT’S NOT A SITUATION ANYBODY WANTS TO BE IN. SO FOR MORE ON THOSE TEMPERATURES AND YOUR COMPLETE FORECAST, WE’LL SEND IT BACK OVER TO DEVIN. I APPRECIATE IT HERE, DEREK. AND THAT’S WITH YOU’RE RUNNING YOUR FAUCETS BOTH COLD AND HOT TAPS TOO. YOU WANT TO GET ALL THAT WATER RUNNING. DON’T WANT THE HOT WATER FREEZING UP TO REAL TIME. TEMPERATURES WERE IN THE 30S AND 40S AT BOGALUSA AT 41. THAT’S WHAT YOU’D REALLY LIKE TO SEE OUT HERE IN THIS PARTICULAR FORECAST. SO WE’RE DOING A GREAT JOB OF MELTING OUT THERE. AND WE HAVEN’T SEEN MUCH OF A BREEZE. THAT’S GOOD TOO BECAUSE THERE ISN’T MUCH OF A WIND CHILL. WE LOOK AT WHAT’S COMING OUR WAY OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS. AND WE DO SEE THERE’S ANOTHER WEAK SYSTEM THAT’S DEVELOPING INTO THE GULF, THOUGH, LOOKING AT THE TEMPERATURES, ANYTHING MORE OF A DEEP FREEZE COMING OUR WAY, ALL THAT REALLY OF THE WORST ARCTIC AIR BOTTLED UP FARTHER NORTH, AND THAT’S STARTING TO RETREAT AND MOVE OUT OF THE WAY AGAIN. WHAT WE’RE LOOKING AT, TOO, FOR THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS, AND THAT BIGGER PICTURE IS GOING TO BE THIS LITTLE SYSTEM IN THE GULF. AND I KNOW YOU DON’T WANT TO HEAR ANYTHING DEVELOPING HERE IN THE GULF, BUT AGAIN, THAT’S NOT GOING TO BE ANYTHING DEVELOPING WITH THE SYSTEM NOWHERE NEAR THE STRENGTH OF WHAT WE JUST WENT THROUGH. SO WE GOT TO COVER THE REFREEZE OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS. AS SOON AS TOMORROW MORNING, WE’VE GOT LOW TEMPERATURES INTO THE TEENS YET AGAIN, 20S AND TEENS, EVEN FOR THE SOUTH SHORE. AND THAT’S THE COLD ADVISORY. NOT MUCH OF A WIND CHILL BEYOND FOG POTENTIAL. I HAVE LOOKED AT THIS PARTICULAR FORECAST HERE FOR US IN A COUPLE DIFFERENT DATA SPOTS. LOOKING AT THAT. BUT WHAT REALLY SHOWS THE PICTURE HERE PRETTY WELL IS GOING TO BE WITH THAT. THE ROAD TEMPERATURES WHERE WE STAND RIGHT NOW, THOSE WILL BE GOING AWAY IN THE ROAD TEMPERATURES THAT WILL BE STARTING TO DIP BELOW FREEZING ONCE AGAIN. ANOTHER MELT GOING INTO THURSDAY, BUT INTO FRIDAY MORNING WE HAVE ANOTHER REFREEZE YET AGAIN WELL BELOW THE FREEZING MARK HERE TOO. AND IT REALLY WON’T BE UNTIL WE GET PAST SATURDAY THAT NEIGHBORHOOD STREETS. YOU GOT TO THINK ABOUT THE LAST OF THOSE SIDE STREETS AND NEIGHBORHOOD STREETS THAT JUST WITH YOUR SNOW REMOVAL EQUIPMENT TO GET TO THAT WE WON’T COMPLETELY BE DONE UNTIL WE GET
New Orleans snowfall beat Salt Lake City’s snow totals for the season in just one day
Updated: 5:45 PM CST Jan 22, 2025
When you think of New Orleans, you think of the warm weather and the food, but not snow! It’s rare, but even more rare is the record amount of snow that fell. Officially, 8 inches of snow was reported at Louis Armstrong International Airport in New Orleans. Another big shocker is that New Orleans got more snow in one day than some cities, which are used to snow, have gotten all season! This includes Salt Lake City, Utah. Salt Lake City has only seen 6.3 inches of snow this season. The normal at this point in the season is typically 29 inches. Normal snowfall for New Orleans is zero. While New Orleans is seeing no shortage of snow, Salt Lake City is seeing a very slow start to the snow season. Even places in Alaska haven’t had that much snow this season.Because the Big Easy is not used to snow, the historic event continues to cripple the city. Schools and businesses are shut down as a lot of roads are impassable. New Orleans is expected to warm back to the 50s and 60s this weekend.
