Birthday boy Justin Bijlow helped Feyenoord win today. Things have not always been easy for the goalkeeper since his return and was unable to keep a clean sheet. He played one of the best games of his career against Bayern Munich and was named Man of the Match.

“I am of course very happy,” Bijlow starts in conversation with Ziggo Sports. “It was a very tough match and it wasn’t the prettiest football we showed, but that also has to do with the quality of the opponent. I think we fought for every ball today and in those few moments we managed to get out , still played football very nicely.”

This victory felt extra special, especially on Bijlow’s birthday. “I’m happy that I was able to help the team today, but of course that’s what I stand for. It’s extra nice that I’m the Man of the Match today. Today went well and I’m happy about that. Now I have to hold on and keep helping the team.”

The goalkeeper finds it difficult to explain why he manages to perform well in the Champions League. “If we also played like this in the Eredivisie, we would have achieved more points. It is still football and it is difficult to explain why. It is positive that we have so many points in the Champions League.”

Finally, Bijlow is asked how he reacted to the news about his trainer. “I read as little as possible, so I heard it before the match, but I put zero energy into it. I don’t think we are performing well enough in the Eredivisie and whether that is the coach’s fault, I don’t know. It certainly depends on the group of players, because it says something that we show it in the Champions League.”
