Despite a clear increase in chances and great playful dominance, FC Bayern lost 3-0 to the mercilessly efficient Feyenoord Rotterdam on Wednesday evening.
Feyenoord coach Brian Priske made three changes after the 1-1 draw at Willem II Tilburg in the domestic Eredivisie: Instead of Read (ineligible to play in the competition), Bueno (bench) and Zerrouki (injured), Nieuwkoop, Hancko and Smal started. With the regular captain Timber and the South Korean Hwang, the Dutch were missing two important midfielders injured.
Bayern coach Vincent Kompany only made one change compared to the 3-2 home win against VfL Wolfsburg: Musiala played in place of Sané (bench). It was also the 21-year-old's first starting eleven in 2025 after recovering from the flu.
CHAMPIONS LEAGUE, 7th matchday – Wednesday
Gimenez shocks Bayern early
Shortly after kick-off, the game was interrupted for a good six minutes because the interior of the stadium was heavily clouded with smoke after fireworks were set off. When the ball rolled again, Gimenez first indicated his danger after Davies lost the ball in his own penalty area (9th).
As the first half progressed, Bayern had more of the game but hardly developed any danger. Not so Feyenoord, who took the lead in the 21st minute. After a long ball from Smal, Kim couldn't quite clear it, while Gimenez took the ball with luck and skill and shot it powerfully from the edge of the penalty area (21'). Only then did Munich itself become dangerous. Goretzka headed just over the goal (23), Coman was denied by Bijlow (33'), who also parried against Kane from close range (42') and then prevented a possible own goal from Stengs (45'+8).
-Joker Guerreiro unhappy, Bijlow in focus
But instead of an equalizer before the break, which would have been well deserved, the game went into half-time 0-2 from the Kompany team's point of view: Guerreiro, who had only recently come on for Davies (muscle injury), caused an unnecessary penalty, which Gimenez ice cold converted (45th + 9).
After the break, Sané replaced Laimer for Munich, while Kimmich moved to the right back in the back four. The playful dominance on the part of the Munich team now became even greater. Similar to the first half, it took a while for FCB to become dangerous. In the 60th minute, Musiala's header from the best position was denied by Bijlow, who made a strong save on the fly. Bayern's strongest phase followed: But Kane's shot from seven meters was just blocked by Hancko (68th), Sané headed the ball from close range onto the outside post in front of the half-empty goal (70th).
Olise past, Ueda counters, Ulreich sees red
Olise also missed a great header chance in the final phase (86'). Afterwards, after a counterattack, Ueda finally turned the result on its head in relation to the course of the game, making it 3-0 from Feyenoord's point of view. It was also the final score. After conceding the third goal, Ulreich was shown a red card for complaining from the sideline (90').
Bayern will play in the Bundesliga next Saturday at SC Freiburg (3:30 p.m.) and in the premier class the following Wednesday (9 p.m.) – on the last matchday of the preliminary round – at home against Slovan Bratislava. Rotterdam's next competitive game is the simultaneous away appearance in the Champions League at OSC Lille (9 p.m.).
