The most important thing in brief: The team is completely unsettled, coach Nuri Sahin is badly injured: Borussia Dortmund is reeling and has suffered its fourth defeat in the fourth competitive game of the year in the Champions League. The Revierclub lost 1:2 (1:0) to FC Bologna despite an early lead. The ever-worsening crisis is putting BVB bosses under increasing pressure when it comes to the coaching issue.
-Dortmund’s Serhou Guirassy made it 1-0 with a penalty kick (15th minute). Thijs Dallinga (71′) and Samuel Iling-Junior (72′) turned the game around for the hosts in a very short time. After that, BVB seemed completely disoriented. There were no real chances to equalize.
Bayer Leverkusen has to worry about direct entry into the round of 16 after their second defeat in the current Champions League season. The German soccer champions lost 1-2 (1-0) at Atlético Madrid on Tuesday and left the field as a loser for the first time after eleven wins in a row. In the final home game against Sparta Prague on Wednesday next week (9 p.m.), Leverkusen urgently need a three-pointer to secure a place among the eight best teams.
Double packer Jamie Leweling put VfB Stuttgart in a good starting position before the last Champions League matchday of the league phase with his first European Cup goals. The Bundesliga team won 3-1 (2-0) against the still pointless Slovakian club Slovan Bratislava and jumped into a playoff spot, at least temporarily.
Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen want to take a big step towards the round of 16 in the Champions League this Tuesday. BVB, with coach Nuri Sahin, who is under a lot of pressure, will play against FC Bologna, who are still without a win, on the penultimate matchday of the league phase (9 p.m./Amazon Prime Video).
With three points, Dortmund could climb to a top eight place. This would allow Borussia to avoid the detour via the playoffs (places 9 to 24). The fourth-placed Leverkusen also have this goal. However, the Werkself will play against top Spanish team Atlético Madrid (9 p.m./DAZN).
As table 26th. VfB Stuttgart still needs every point to get into the top 24 teams and thus reach the playoffs. With a win against zero-point club Slovan Bratislava (9 p.m./DAZN), the chances of knockout games in the premier class would increase significantly.
