On TF1 Tuesday January 21, Astrid Panosyan-Bouvet, Minister responsible for Labor and Employment, put forward a line of thought to finance the autonomy branch of social protection, which “falls too much”, according to her, to businesses and workers. An additional burden could then be placed on “wealthy” retirees.
If discussions on the 2025 budget are going well, at the same time the government is also working, again and again, to find solutions to replenish the Social Security coffers. The Senate proposed that all employees work seven more hours without pay. An avenue that Astrid Panosyan-Bouvet does not rule out, but to which she brings nuance. Invited on the set of the TF1 morning show this Tuesday, January 21, the Minister of Labor estimated that “the financing of social protection today falls too much on businesses and workers”. For her, it is necessary that “this burden is better distributed across the entire population”. Like retirees.
Pensions over 2,000 euros taxed more?
“There are different taxes and contributions that could be considered on retirees who can afford it […] depending on the pension level”explained Astrid Panosyan-Bouvet. What level of pension? “It’s up for discussion, it could be 2,000 euros, it could be 2,500.” This measure could affect 40% of retirees. In her reflection, the Minister of Labor also stressed that she wanted us to stop seeing retirees “like a homogeneous block”.
For Astrid Panosyan-Bouvet, the calculation is simple: you have to find “2.5 billion euros in a full year”. “If we add a contribution from retirees who can afford it, it would be between 500 and 800 million euros”she added, again evoking her suggestion of an additional burden on well-off retirees, counting on the “intergenerational solidarity” to have this measure accepted.
