Trump proposes renaming Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America

REDDING, Calif. — During his inauguration, President Donald Trump revisited an idea he had earlier this month: renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. This proposal has sparked debate, with some supporting the change and others questioning its priority.

Presidents have the authority to rename national landmarks, as demonstrated by former President Barack Obama in 2015 when he changed Mount McKinley’s name to Denali. Trump has also expressed his intention to reverse that decision. The process of renaming is generally easier and more widely accepted when the landmark is within national boundaries.

“I think that there may be a cultural aspect behind it, behind, you know, making America great. It’s kind of going back to that manifest destiny idea, so I think it is important,” Stephen Wallis, Redding local said. “Now, what the actual outcome of it is going to be, I don’t think any of us can say.”

Angel Snow, another Redding local said, “In a lot of ways, the Gulf of America makes more sense than the Gulf of Mexico because Mexico is part of America.”

A previous article we posted about the proposed name change, received mixed reactions. Some commenters argued that this topic should not be a priority, while others expressed confusion about the logistical implications of such a change.
