Donald Trump’s inauguration, between festivities and business allegiance

It was eight years ago, but who still remembers? Hundreds of thousands of women demonstrated in Washington against Donald Trump, the day after the new president’s inauguration ceremony, on January 21, 2017. The previous day, the National Mall, which runs through the political center of the federal capital and where his swearing-in took place, played host to sparse ranks of Republican supporters.

This year, Trump’s return to power is being accompanied by a huge “MAGA” world party (“Make America Great Again,” the Trumpist slogan), with political figures of the reactionary right flocking from all over the planet, galas to the glory of the 47th President of the US, business deals looking good and millions of dollars being sucked in by the Trump empire.

However, the show of strength is likely to be marred by the bitter cold expected to fall on Washington on Monday, with temperatures expected to drop to around -6°C. The swearing-in ceremony will therefore be shifted from the Capitol steps to inside the Congressional Rotunda, the very spot that was invaded by rioters on January 6, 2021. The ceremony for Ronald Reagan’s second term, in 1985, was also held there due to severe cold. “We will open Capital One Arena [Washington’s sports arena] on Monday for LIVE viewing of this Historic event, and to host the Presidential Parade. I will join the crowd at Capital One, after my Swearing In,” Trump promised on his Truth Social network on Friday, anxious not to miss out on the expected popular jubilation.
