Why were guns banned on the set of the film?

On Sunday January 19 at 9:10 p.m., TF1 broadcasts Operation fortune, ruse of war. An action film shot in unprecedented conditions, for greater safety.

In 2023, the British Guy Ritchie unveiled his film Operation Fortune: Ruse of War on Prime Video. An outing in the director's purest style, between a crazy heist, funny scenes and a host of talented actors. Jumbled together, we count on his favorite Jason Statham, but also Aubrey Plaza, Cary Elwes, Hugh Grant, and Josh Hartnett. A gang filmed with fake weapons, for a very specific reason.

Operation fortune, ruse of war : the funny infiltration of Jason Statham & co

Here it all begins with the theft of a highly guarded shipment in Odessa, Ukraine… It is a cutting-edge military weapon, threatening to disrupt the world order if it falls into the wrong hands. To repatriate this technological treasure, a team of spies will be set up. The people responsible for this infiltration mission will be special agent Orson Fortune, the brilliant Sarah Fidel, but also the resourceful JJ Davies. A gang that film star Dany Francesco will join. A man chosen to approach a wealthy arms dealer Greg Simmonds, obviously a fan of the actor…

Guy Ritchie : “I never understood why we had real guns on set”

Between zaniness, well-felt dialogues and action galore, Operation Fortune: Ruse of War easily joined the Guy Ritchie galaxy, alongside Rock’n’rolla, Weapons, crimes and botany, The Gentlemen or even The Covenant. A last city which, like Operation Fortunewas shot with fake weapons, Airsoft pistols and rifles, for added security. A decision taken by Guy Ritchie after the filming of Rust and the death of photographer Halyna Hutchins following the shooting of Alec Baldwin. In the columns of Firstthe director returned to this choice: “Everything has changed now. We haven't used weapons since filming Rust. We don't want them. The Covenant is the first shoot we have had without weapons, which was a real relief for all of us. Airsoft guns look a lot like real guns. Everything feels genuine, and ultimately, no one can end up hurt. (…) I never understood why we had real firearms on set. It's one of those things that everyone had, and now it's a relief not to have that sword of Damocles hanging over our heads.”
