Luc Tangorre: the “southern rapist” supported by an important committee

It was in 1979 that the first actions of Luc Tangorre were noted in Marseille, they continued until April 1981, the date of his arrest. Nicknamed then the “southern rapist”it operates in the 8th and 9th arrondissement of the Marseille city and is the subject of nine complaints. Finally, he was convicted and sentenced on May 24, 1983 to 15 years in prison. If the evidence which overwhelms him leaves no doubt for justice, a support committee strongly doubts any involvement of Luc Tangorre. A student described as “kind and well educated”, his profile does not match, according to them, the seriousness of the rapes and indecent assaults attributed to him. Quickly, several intellectuals lined up behind the historian Pierre Vidal-Naquet who signed the text Rape is a crime, so is a miscarriage of justicein Le Monde of January 25, 1985. From authors Gilles Perrault and Marguerite Duras, to politicians Robert Badinter, Albin Chalandon and Jean-Claude Gaudin, important voices are heard alongside him. A paid mobilization, because Tangorre will benefit from a partial pardon in 1987, granted by President François Mitterrand.

Luc Tangorre, pardoned then convicted for two other cases

Placed under judicial supervision, he will reoffend less than a year later. On the sidelines of the Feria festivities, he will rape two American students who will easily confuse him. Sentenced to 18 years in prison for these facts, Luc Tangorre was released in 2000 and did it again. In 2019, the Nîmes criminal court will sentence him to three years in prison. He was on trial there for a sexual assault on a fifteen-year-old minor, committed at Grau du Roi in 2014.
