Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been waiting for his next chance after leaving Manchester United – and he is now set for a return to management.
It’s now more than three years since Manchester United sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Just months after United signed the likes of Raphael Varane, Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo, Solskjaer’s time at Old Trafford came to an end.
Solskjaer had United in a strong position in 2021 but defeat in the Europa League final and poor form in the 2021-22 season saw him go.
Strangely though, Solskjaer has not found his way back into a dugout since his United departure.
Solskjaer snubbed a return to Molde but has now taken a huge step towards a return to management.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer approaching managerial move
As United came from behind to beat Southampton 3-1 on Thursday night, Solskjaer was bracing himself to board a plane and take a new job.
Fabrizio Romano claims that Solskjaer and his agent Jim Solbakken will be flying to Istanbul on Friday.
Solskjaer will then become the new Besiktas boss, taking over on a contract until the summer of 2026.
Besiktas sacked Giovanni van Bronckhorst in November and have now picked Solskjaer as his replacement after going with Serdar Topraktepe as an interim coach.
This will be just the fourth club Solskjaer has managed; he has enjoyed two spells at Molde and has already coached Cardiff City as well as United.
-Solskjaer will be charged with the task of turning Besiktas around after a disappointing season so far.
Besiktas have only recorded 30 points from 18 games and sit sixth in the Turkish Super Lig table.
Solskjaer sets to battle Jose Mourinho
Solskjaer will not be the only former United boss in Turkiye.
Jose Mourinho is in charge of Fenerbahce and has them sitting second in the table, eight points adrift of leaders Galatasaray.
Solskjaer was the man who replaced Mourinho at United and the pair are scheduled to lock horns on May 4.
There have been five meetings between Mourinho and Solskjaer in the past with Solskjaer losing two, winning two and drawing one.
Mourinho picked out his 6-1 win over United with Tottenham as one of his favourite wins, believing he could have embarrassed Solskjaer that day.
Solskjaer will now look to add to his win tally whilst making Besiktas a force to be reckoned with alongside Galatasaray and Fenerbahce once again.
