The penalty that Club Brugge was awarded against Genk after a VAR intervention briefly caused confusion about who would take it. After the match, Maxim De Cuyper provided more information about how that process works.

“We have a list of eligible names, but on the field we discuss who feels good at that moment,” he explains on Club Brugge’s official website.

According to De Cuyper, Hans Vanaken usually takes the lead in that decision. “He then says: you or you can kick. Today it was Tzolis, and he did a great job.” The penalty ultimately made it 2-1, giving Club a narrow but deserved victory.

“Genk took the lead out of nowhere in the first half, but we responded quickly with the equalizer,” De Cuyper analyzes. “We created more chances in the second half, while Genk was hardly dangerous. That makes this victory, despite the small margin, completely justified.”
