Play, recover, train and repeat – VfB are entering a busy run of fixtures but have high hopes for Wednesday’s home match against RB Leipzig.

Three points, a clean sheet, a goal off the bench and multiple comebacks – Sunday’s 1-0 win at FC Augsburg in VfB’s first match of 2025 was a satisfactory one for several reasons. Sebastian Hoeneß’s side are hoping to use the manner of victory as momentum going into the home match against fourth-placed RB Leipzig on Wednesday 15 January (20:30 CET). With Stuttgart only four points behind their opponents in seventh, it promises to be an enthralling encounter.

“We want to use this home game to close in on Leipzig,” said Hoeneß ahead of his team’s final match of the first half of the 2024/25 Bundesliga season. Hoeneß’s players are brimming with confidence and looking forward to testing themselves against one of the division’s best sides in front of their own fans at the MHP Arena. “RB Leipzig started the new year very well,” the head coach continued. “They certainly have lofty ambitions and a great deal of quality in their squad.”

Maximilian Mittelstädt ruled out

Hoeneß will have to make a change at left-back, with Maximilian Mittelstädt unavailable due to a muscle problem. It remains to be seen whether the 27-year-old will recover in time for the visit of SC Freiburg on Saturday 18 January. Dan-Axel Zagadou, El Bilal, Justin Diehl and Luca Raimund all remain sidelined through injury.
