Bundesliga: Bayer sticks with Bayern

Borussia Dortmund’s sporting decline continues unabated, while Bayer Leverkusen remains close to the top of the table. Desolate Dortmund lost 2:4 (0:3) to newly promoted Holstein Kiel on the last first round matchday of the Bundesliga, while Leverkusen fought back to a 1:0 (0:0) win against FSV Mainz 05.

At Omar Marmoush’s possible farewell performance, Eintracht Frankfurt also celebrated another sense of success and won 4-1 (1-1) against SC Freiburg. VfL Wolfsburg also celebrated their 5-1 (1-0) home win against Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Alejandro Grimaldo (49th) gave Leverkusen victory with a wonderful free kick. Mainz acted extremely passive for almost the entire game, but also had to cope with the early loss of striker Jonathan Burkardt. The attacker was substituted injured in the 3rd minute. Leverkusen moved within one point of FC Bayern at the top of the table, at least overnight. The Munich team will play against TSG Hoffenheim on Wednesday.

Will Marmoush score for the last time for Frankfurt?

Even before the game, Frankfurt’s focus was on Marmoush, who was about to move to Manchester City. The Egyptian then scored to make it 2-1 (65′), and he also set up Robin Koch’s goal (43′). The further Eintracht goals from Hugo Ekitiké (71st) and Nnamdi Collins (81st) cemented Frankfurt’s Champions League ambitions. Ritsu Doan (37th) had put the weak Freiburg team in the lead.

Wolfsburg can also dream of the European Cup. Jonas Wind (3rd/foul penalty), Joakim Maehle (60th), Maximilian Arnold (75th) and Lukas Nmecha twice (84th/87th) scored the goals for Lower Saxony. Shio Fukuda (89th) scored the consolation goal for Gladbach, who are stuck in mid-table – just like BVB, who were shockingly weak in Kiel.

Shuto Machino (27th minute), Phil Harres (32nd) and Alexander Bernhardsson (45th + 4th) scored for Kiel in the first half. Fiete Arp (90+8) made the final score 4-2 for Holstein. With their third win of the season, the penultimate team moved closer to the safe places. Giovanni Reyna (71st) and Jamie Gittens (77th) scored for Dortmund. Kiel’s Lewis Holtby was shown a red card in the final phase for a serious foul (86th).
