Gov. Kristi Noem is issuing awards to several people who took part in the response to a major flood event.

Southeastern South Dakota faced unprecedented, 1,000-year flooding in the last summer. Yet through the mud and lost homes heroes were made.

During her State of the State address, Governor Kristi Noem issued the Governor’s Medal of Heroism to state geologist Tim Cowman, four Game Fish and Parks employees, and six Sioux Falls Swift Water Rescue team members.

“These individuals all went above and beyond throughout the crisis, and truly saved lives,” Noem said. “We cannot thank them enough for all they have accomplished. Please give them a round of applause to thank them for keeping us safe.”

Officials said thanks to swift responses across the state, only one life was confirmed lost in last years flooding.
