Abbé Pierre is the target of nine new accusations of sexual violence according to the new report from the Egaé cabinet, responsible for shedding light on his actions. The question of renaming places that bear his name is increasingly being asked at Emmaüs and in towns and villages, such as in Pau.
It is one of the largest Emmaüs communities in France. In Pau (Pyrénées-Atlantiques), the new accusations against Abbé Pierre arouse new unease among the 120 companions. Tuesday January 14, Jean-Pierre is dismayed. “We were quite impressed by the customers who spoke to us very gently about it. They almost pitied us. He left his mark on several generations, but it’s rather unforgivable what he did”he explains.
Germain, who has led the community for 40 years, removed all traces of Abbé Pierre from the site. “I am against total, blind idolatry. At one point, he was a reference, that hurts”he confides. The new accusations of sexual violence revealed on Monday January 13 arouse fear. “This is not forgivable. The fact remains that the legacy he leaves is important”underlines a woman. A gigantic bitterness shakes the community of Pau.
