Rude awakening for the residents of a residential area in Montmorency. In freezing cold, they were evacuated Monday around 11:30 p.m. by the Val-d'Oise firefighters because the building on rue du Try threatened to collapse on its neighbor at 40-42 rue des Carrières, due to a landslide. In total, 143 people were forced to leave their homes.
While a majority were able to be accommodated with close family, 42 of them were urgently accommodated at the Nelson-Mandela gymnasium, opened by the municipality of Montmorency. These victims are taken care of by Red Cross personnel.
The landslide dates back to January 2, 2025. But the results of the first assessments did not lead to a danger order. The weather in recent days, still very rainy, has had the effect of aggravating the situation. Gullying, that is to say the sudden erosion of soil, was noted under the concrete slab of the parking lot of the residence on rue du Try, creating a risk of collapse.
A total of two buildings were evacuated, one threatening to fall on the second. New assessments must be carried out during the day, to reassess the situation on site. This urgent evacuation is reminiscent of another that occurred in Argenteuil. A building on rue Jean Moulin was emptied of its occupants in a disaster on November 7, 2024, after structural defects were noted. The residents were finally able to return to their apartments, not without fear, 10 days later.
