BVB wanted to “achieve a good result”

After three and a half years, Donyell Malen has left Borussia Dortmund and signed a contract with Aston Villa. According to information from “Sky”, the 25-year-old offensive player, who was already considered a candidate for departure last winter, will bring a transfer fee of 25 million euros plus 5 million euros in bonuses into BVB’s coffers. If successful, the Dortmunders will receive the amount they paid for painting.

Malen came from PSV Eindhoven in July 2021 for 30 million euros, making him one of the top 10 most expensive BVB signings. In 132 games he scored 39 goals and prepared 20 more; his best Bundesliga season came in 2023/24 with 13 goals and three assists. In the current season, the Dutchman has shuttled between the bench and the starting eleven, starting ten times in 21 appearances. His market value experienced a rollercoaster ride during his time in Dortmund: when he was signed, he was valued at 30 million euros, after several devaluations it fell to 16 million euros, reaching its peak value in May 2024 at 40 million euros. According to the latest update, its market value is 28 million euros.

“Even if not all sporting expectations were ultimately fulfilled on both sides, we look back on beautiful moments, important goals and believe that we have now found a good solution for everyone. Donny, you and your family all the best for the future,” explained sports director Sebastian Kehl. The manager said on “Sky”: “In the end, of course, we tried to get a good result for Borussia Dortmund. In the end, both parties are satisfied with it. Now we can move on.”

At Aston Villa, whose investments in the squad have broken the 200 million mark with the transfer of Malen, he will meet ex-Dortmunder Ian Maatsen, who was loaned out to BVB in the last second half of the season. Alongside Leon Bailey and Jaden Philogene, who could leave the club in January, the Dutchman is the only nominal winger in the Villans squad. In the 4-2-3-1 favored by Unai Emery, captain John McGinn and Jacob Ramsey recently shared the left wing position.

Malen missed out on making it into the top 10 of the most expensive BVB departures. After his move, income this season will increase to around 59 million euros, offset by expenses of 80 million euros. With Jamie Gittens, Karim Adeyemi, Julien Duranville and Cole Campbell, there are four other wingers in Nuri Şahin’s squad. Maximilian Beier can also hold this position. Nevertheless, the black and yellow are said to be looking for a replacement for Malen on the wing.
