SV Werder Bremen started the new year with a defeat. At RB Leipzig, coach Ole Werner’s team lost 2:4 (1:2) and had to accept the end of the series of four competitive game wins in a row. In addition, the Bremen team missed the jump to fifth place in the table, which they would have achieved with an away win and thus overtaken the Saxons.
Xavi Simons (24th and 35th minutes), Benjamin Šeško (47th) and Christoph Baugartner (90th) scored the goals for the hosts. For Bremen, who were generally too harmless and unusually vulnerable defensively, Mitchell Weiser scored to make it 1-1 (26th) and Oliver Burke scored just before the final whistle (90th + 3).
