In a thrilling FA Cup showdown, Tamworth is gearing up to pull off a historic upset against Premier League titans Tottenham Hotspur, armed with what they believe is a standout “weapon” in their tactical arsenal.
Today, at the Lamb Ground, the non-league side Tamworth hosts the Spurs, having already demonstrated their prowess by eliminating League One outfit Huddersfield. The catalyst for their previous success? None other than Tom Tonks, the self-proclaimed master of the long throw-in.
Tonks, a seasoned midfielder known for his remarkable throwing skills that rival many players’ kicking abilities, gained notoriety when his soaring throw-in inadvertently resulted in an own goal by Huddersfield’s keeper, Chris Maxwell. “I’ve been perfecting my throw-ins since I was in primary school,” Tonks shared with The Sun earlier in the season. “My headteacher didn’t believe the distance I could throw until he saw it with his own eyes!”

Dubbed the Rory Delap of the National League, Tonks humorously remarked, “I wouldn’t mind his pay packet from years ago, though! I’ve never measured my throw, but I just aim to send it as far as possible. Sometimes my teammates ask me to ease off and keep it nearer the goal, but I can easily launch it beyond the back post.”
-Defending against this unusual tactic poses a unique challenge, as opposing keepers and defenders often struggle to position themselves appropriately. Salford City defender Curtis Tilt noted to BBC Sport, “Tonks’ throw is a significant concern. It’s more threatening than a corner because you can throw it in multiple ways—loopy or hard-driven.”
Tonks agrees, adding, “Timing is crucial. A bit of gym work helps, especially lat pull-downs! Keepers are accustomed to managing corners, but my throw is tricky due to its unpredictable trajectory. Thankfully, we have several players over six feet ready to contest for the headers.”
