After Bayer Leverkusen’s 3-2 win in Dortmund, the pressure on FC Bayern grew ahead of the difficult game against “dreaded opponents” Borussia Mönchengladbach. But the record champions solved the task confidently; the 1-0 win does not sufficiently reflect their clear dominance. The statistics for the game were extremely one-sided: 23:5 shots, including 10:0 on goal, 67% ball possession.
The Bayern votes for victory
Head coach Vincent Kompany:
“It’s a very difficult away game. The mentality was good, we are basically satisfied. We had chances in the first half and played well in the game. But the chances were greater in the second half. We didn’t decide the game there. Ultimately you have to score the goals. We didn’t do that. Then you just have to keep it at zero. If it’s only 1-0 in the last ten minutes, anything can happen. But we stayed calm. Compliments to the team for always pushing on.”
Sports director Max Eberl:
“It was a very good, very mature performance. In the first half Gladbach didn’t have a chance, we had two or three very promising ones. In the second half, Gladbach had Tim Kleindienst’s header. If we take the whole game, the game system, the dominance and all the statistics, then the victory is well deserved. Nobody can take the first round championship away from us now, it’s a great interim result, but we want to keep scoring points.”
Captain Manuel Neuer:
“I would say we deserved to win. In any case, we missed a lot of chances. My counterpart really had a great day. We can be very happy and satisfied with this victory. That was simply deserved. We can fall behind, there’s no question about that. But we missed a lot of good chances. With all the chances we created, it was only a matter of time before we scored our goal.”
Goalscorer Harry Kane:
“It is very important to start the year with a win. The performance was very good, we created a lot of chances. We showed a very good attitude and mentality. We now have some important games and want to keep the momentum going.”
Joshua Kimmich:
“We made it a bit exciting at the back. We had a lot of good chances. In the first half by Thomas Müller and in the second we had several good opportunities. But Gladbach also had a good header chance through Tim Kleindienst when the score was 0-0. Overall the manner was fine. We didn’t allow anything in the first half, but in the second it was more open. But in the end it’s about winning – and we succeeded.”
