Chelsea announced their lineup to face Morecambe in the FA Cup on Saturday, and fans aren’t too keen to see Axel Disasi in it. The Blues are at home against the fourth-tier side in the third round of the competition.
They are widely expected to cruise into the next stage despite their form has fizzled out lately. After going 11 games unbeaten in all competitions, Enzo Maresca’s side failed to win their most recent four, drawing and losing twice each. That also saw Chelsea lose some ground in the title race to runaway leaders Liverpool. They are 10 points behind the Reds, who have a game in hand.
The west London outfit will be hoping to return to winning ways here and bring some momentum back into their campaign. Their Premier League fixtures resume on January 14, starting with Bournemouth at home.
However, fans aren’t convinced of the outcome against Morecambe just yet, as the presence of Disasi in today’s starting lineup has them worried. The defender has drawn the ire of supporters lately for his costly errors in the Newcastle United and Ipswich games. He scored an own goal against the Magpies that put them 2-0 up before the break. The 26-year-old then made a defensive error in the Ipswich game that led to Liam Delap’s strike as they lost 2-0.
Although Morecombe aren’t that big a side, Disasi’s propensity to make defensive mistakes has the Chelsea faithful feeling quite anxious. They even took to X to express their concerns:

Another fan asked Disasi’s mere presence in the side:

StormKing8190 tweeted that his elation at seeing Reece James was offset after seeing Disasi in the lineup:
“The joy I feel seeing Reece is negated by seeing disasi”
Another fan suggested Maresca to ‘give up’ on the player altogether:

Chelsea and Morecombe meet for just the second time
For just the second time in history, Chelsea and Morecombe clash in a competitive game. Their only prior meeting also came in the FA Cup, four years ago, and interestingly, in the same round too.
In January 2021, the Blues ran out 4-0 victors at an empty Stamford Bridge stadium, as COVID restrictions meant fans weren’t allowed back in yet. Mason Mount, Timo Werner, Callum Hudson-Odoi, and Kai Havertz were the goalscorers on the night, as the Blues comfortably saw out the Shrimps.
Interestingly, none of these scorers are at the club today, with all four of them breathing new life away from west London. The side has managed to replace them with equally talented players, such as Conor Gallagher, who’s been on fire this season.
