A cyclone pre-alert was triggered Friday morning in Mayotte with the approach of tropical storm Dikeledi, which is expected to pass on Sunday 140 km south of the island, less than a month after the passage of cyclone Chido, which ravaged the island.
Less than a month after the passage of Cyclone Chido, which devastated Mayotte last December, a cyclone pre-alert was triggered this Friday, with the approach of tropical storm Dikeledi.
The prefecture recommended that residents anticipate all drug treatments in the event of illness and “prepare reserves of lighting,” “water, non-perishable food and an emergency kit.”
The prefect asked residents to cancel outdoor outings planned for this weekend, to fix objects and obstacles “likely to constitute dangers or projectiles” in the event of gusts of wind and to facilitate the evacuation of water.
He also announced that the decision had been taken to “postpone by a few days” the administrative start of the school year scheduled for January 13 “to absorb this new shock, to ensure that we are prepared for it”.
-“Heavy rainfall” expected
At the time of passage near Mayotte of this low pressure system which could then have reached the stage of “strong tropical storm”, Météo-France forecasts “wind gusts of 90-100 km/h” and “a risk of marine submersion on the ribs”.
“Heavy intermittent precipitation” is expected from Saturday evening and until the night of Sunday to Monday.
On December 14, Mayotte was devastated by Chido, accompanied by wind gusts exceeding 220 km/h. The passage of this intense tropical cyclone, the most devastating experienced by the small French archipelago in the Indian Ocean in 90 years, left at least 39 dead and more than 5,600 injured, destroying many precarious homes in the poorest department. from France.
