O new film by the author of “Terra Estrangeira”, “Central do Brasil” and “Diários de Che Guevara” touches on an open wound in the history of Brazil, since, as the filmmaker from Rio will say in this interview, “no one was arrested for participating in the military dictatorship” of his country. The starting point is the 2015 book of the same name written by Marcelo Rubens Paiva, one of the five children of Rubens Paiva (1929-1971), engineer and former deputy detained in the early 1970s at his home in Leblon, Rio de Janeiro. , in the darkest political period of those leaden years. His body was never found. Eunice Paiva (1929-2018), matriarch of the family, graduated in Law, then began a legal battle that went down in history, revealing the truth about her husband’s murder. The lawyer became a national symbol of the fight against the dictatorship. Like the book, it is Eunice that Salles’ work focuses on — an extraordinary role by Fernanda Torres, complemented by Fernanda Montenegro in the final scenes, in the character’s old age. Film and actress are now on the path to upcoming awards. Decades after her mother, Fernanda Montenegro, lost the Oscar in 1999 with “Central do Brasil”, it remains to be seen whether her daughter, Fernanda Torres, will be able to get there with another film by Walter Salles, emotional and fair in tone, averse to sentimentality . For now, Brazil has welcomed him with open arms. On December 2nd, I spoke to Salles in a long conversation recorded in the Mamounia gardens, as part of the latest edition of the Marrakesh Festival, in Morocco, which paid tribute to him.
